February is Black History Month

Villa Academy joins with the Office of Catholic Schools and the Archdiocese of Seattle in celebrating Black History Month. Throughout February, our students learn about the lives who've had such an impact in the struggle to eradicate racism.

For children and young adults, HERE is a booklist of recommended fiction and nonfiction about race and activism from creators of color.

Black History moment: Did you know that the Statue of Liberty was conceived to celebrate the end of slavery? The original design featured Lady Liberty holding broken shackles. In the resulting statue, the chains were relegated to a barely visible spot under her foot. The statue as an homage to immigrants belies the fact that Ellis Island didn't open until six years after it was unveiled. You can read more in a fascintating Washington Post article HERE.
